ACL @ the Alamo: Lyle Lovett

ACL @ the Alamo returns this Monday, September 24, with a special program featuring the one and only Lyle Lovett. We’ll be presenting the 60-minute Season 15 episode featuring the iconoclastic Texan troubadour in support of his now-classic LP Lyle Lovett & His Large Band, including Lovett staples like “Here I Am,” “Good Intentions,” “If I Had a Boat” and “The Wedding Song.” Following the episode will be a collection of performances from Lovett’s many appearances on ACL, including what is likely the first public broadcast of “That’s Right, You’re Not From Texas.”

Taping Announcement: Jack White

As charismatic as he is talented, there’s no denying that Jack White is one of the most exciting musicians to hit the scene in the last decade. The Detroit native brought blues-based rock & roll back to the mainstream with the White Stripes and indulged in acclaimed side projects the Raconteurs (who graced our stage in 2006) and the Dead Weather. Earlier this year came Blunderbuss, White’s first album under his own name, which debuted at #1 on the charts in the US, UK, Canada and Switzerland. Q Magazine calls the eclectic record “a concentrated shot of charisma, undiluted and intoxicating,” while Rolling Stone notes that it has “huge riffs, wild ideas, tunes for miles: Jack White has created a classic.” The Guardian asserts that “Blunderbuss is White at his most strange, contradictory and unfathomable, and therefore at his best.” Now White is coming to Austin to headline one night of the Austin City Limits Music Festival, and we couldn’t resist enticing him to bring music from every stage of his career, to our stage for an episode of ACL. Please join us on October 14 for an unforgettable night of rock & roll.

Encore: Wilco

This Saturday Austin City Limits brings you musical veterans both on and off the screen: the one and only Wilco. After nearly two decades of constantly redefining its sound, the Chicago band’s fourth appearance on the show proves to be one of its most memorable to date, featuring a special guest appearance, leader Jeff Tweedy’s remarkable songs and some electrifying guitar playing from Nels Cline.

Concentrating on its latest release The Whole Love, the Chicago sextet puts such stellar tracks as “Art of Almost,” “Open Mind” and “Dawned On Me” through their paces with near-perfect poise. It’s not all the new album, of course, as the band also drops a few deep cuts like “Bull Black Nova” and “War On War” into the set. As the icing to this already delicious cake, Wilco tourmate Nick Lowe drops by with his classic “Cruel to Be Kind,” backed by the boys themselves.

Encore: Pearl Jam

With one foot in the punk energy and political consciousness of alternative and the other in the big hooks and stage presence of classic rock, Pearl Jam is one of the titans of the rock landscape. So we were pleased to host the band in 2009, the day before its headlining appearance at the ACL Music Festival. Armed with a set of tunes from its then-new album Backspacer, plus back catalog gems, the Seattle quintet ripped through fierce rockers (“The Fixer,” “Porch”) and laid down tender ballads (“The End,” “Just Breathe”) with its legendary passion and power. The band invited a few friends along as well, including ACL vet Ben Harper for “Red Mosquito” and Austin’s own Will Taylor & Strings Attached, who provided some cool string arrangements. This is an episode that’s already become a favorite in ACL history, and we’re pleased to broadcast it once again.

Encore: Dave Matthews Band

When the Dave Matthews Band took the ACL stage three years ago, it was the culmination of a long courtship process that finally allowed producer Terry Lickona to put a check mark on his wishlist. The long-running pop/jam band was touring its acclaimed record Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King, its first following the death of founding member LeRoi Moore, and was ready to prove it wasn’t going to let tragedy slow it down.  Firing on all cylinders, the band turned in a triumphant set including the raucous “Shake Me Like a Monkey,” the whimsical “Funny the Way It Is” and the life-affirming anthem “Why I Am,” a direct tribute to Moore. But don’t take our word for it – check your local PBS listings and see for yourself.

Season 38 begins on October 6

Austin City Limits will premiere its brand new season Saturday, October 6th, with a rare, full-hour performance from iconic British band Radiohead. Coming up, we’ve got a killer line-up of the best in popular music, including 2012 Best New Artist Grammy winner Bon Iver, Bonnie Raitt with Mavis Staples, the Shins, the Civil Wars and more. We also have an ACL Presents special airing this fall showcasing the Americana Music Festival.
