Jenny Lewis’ smart pop gems

Singer and songwriter Jenny Lewis last appeared on the ACL stage in 2005 with the band Rilo Kiley for a memorable show that opened our thirty-first season. So we were pleased to welcome her back, this time under her own name, for a sparkling show full of smart pop gems.

Reaching back for a quick history lesson, Lewis and her five-piece band opened with the shimmering country rock of “Silver Lining” from the Rilo Kiley catalog. The song boasted a classic 70s singer/songwriter vibe, which she carried over to other rootsy tune like “Late Bloomer,” “You Are What You Love” and the Linda Ronstadt-like “Rise Up With Fists.” The country/folk elements took a back seat on other songs, with the midtempo pop of “Slippery Slopes” and “The New You,” the sweetly charming “Love U Forever” and the devilishly catchy “Head Underwater” drawing from familiar but less obvious sources. The brash “The Moneymaker” and “The Next Messiah,” on which the band was joined by Lewis’ frequent collaborator (and beau) Johnathan Rice, found her comfortably embracing louder rock & roll, a thread she continued with the climactic shuffle “Just One of the Guys.”

Backed by her bandmates surrounding a single mic, Lewis ended the main set with her acoustic guitar for the beautiful, hymn-like “Acid Tongue.” After blowing the audience a kiss, she exited the stage to wild applause. But it wasn’t over yet  – the crowd response was so eager she came back with a guitarist and harmony singer for a folk take on Rilo Kiley’s “With Arms Outstretched,” which the audience greeted with cheers from the first line. It was a great show, and we can’t wait for you to see it when it airs early next year on PBS.

Jeff Tweedy’s family affair

Jeff Tweedy is a longtime friend of Austin City Limits. His band Wilco has taken our stage four times, first in Season 25 and most recently in Season 37. So we were happy to welcome him back once again, this time in support of Sukierae, his upcoming debut solo LP. Joined by a band that includes Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig from Lucius and his drumming son Spencer, Tweedy graced the Moody with a generously programmed set, highlighting not only the new album, but also songs drawn from the many stages of his 20+ year career.

The first half of the set was devoted to songs from Sukierae. Despite three guitars tripling the riff, “Down From Above” opened the show with a slow tempo and sedate arrangement, inviting attention instead of demanding it. Precedent established, new tunes like the midtempo pop song “Summer Noon,” countrified ditty “Desert Bell” and pretty ballads “Honey Combed” and “Where My Love” kept the volume down and the intimacy up, as if letting the audience peek in on a practice session that mustn’t wake the neighbors. The band didn’t keep things too quiet, though, letting stabs of dissonant guitar and keyboard spice “Diamond Light,” some muscular soloing punctuate “New Moon” and noisy riffs battle for prominence in “World Away.” The audience participation of “Slow Love” and the straightforward folk rock of “Nobody Dies Anymore” brought the band set to a close with a more bracing vibe.

The bandleader remained, armed with his collection of acoustic guitars and his vast catalog. He dug deep for Wilco’s “Born Alone” and Golden Smog’s “Please Tell My Brother,” but mostly stuck with fan favorites. From Yankee Hotel Foxtrot standards “Jesus, etc.” and “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart” to Uncle Tupelo gem “New Madrid” and A Ghost is Born standout “Hummingbird” (on which he clammed the whistling solo, but laughed it off), Tweedy had the audience comfortably sitting in the palm of his hand, getting them truly riled up with “Passenger Side,” a classic from Wilco’s debut A.M. The band then returned for spirited runs through “Give Back the Key to My Heart,” the Doug Sahm cover that appeared on Uncle Tupelo’s final LP Anodyne, and “California Stars,” Wilco’s best-known contribution to the Woody Guthrie tribute Mermaid Avenue.

For an encore, Tweedy hit the stage solo for “Misunderstood,” incorporating the album version’s dissonance after hitting a bum note and sweeping the audience up in a chant of “nothin’” to bring the show to a close. It was a special night full of new music, classic tunes and a perfectly receptive audience. We can’t wait for you to see this show when it broadcasts on PBS this fall.

Jason Isbell’s blurred lines

“I try my best to have a lot of fun playing really sad songs,” declared singer/guitarist/songwriter Jason Isbell from the Austin City Limits stage.”It’s kinda what I do.” Brooding melancholy isn’t usually a recipe for onstage success, but in the hands of Alabama native and former Drive-By Trucker Isbell, it’s the fuel for a mighty musical engine – what Facebooker Odam Hunt calls “an unstoppable force.” That talent powered a cool ACL debut, as Isbell brought his soulful voice, stinging guitar and acclaimed catalog of tunes to ACL in celebration of his stellar new record Southeastern.

Isbell and his band the 400 Unit opened with blasts of loud, Crazy Horse-style rock & roll, as “Flying Over Water” and “Go It Alone” served notice that this wasn’t going to be an easygoing country/folk show. Then it was straight into “Alabama Pines,” a wistful walk down memory lane that won the 2012 Americana Music Association Song of the Year award. He travelled that lane even further into the past, resurrecting his DBT classics “Decoration Day” and “Outfit,” the latter’s gorgeous waltz-time meditation on fatherly advice reiterating how early Isbell fulfilled his songwriting promise.

Once Isbell strapped on his acoustic guitar, the creeping darkness came to full flower. “Live Oak” and “Different Days” looked back at shameful days gone by with the hope that current loved ones won’t notice the craggy lines left on the character’s face. The jaunty but subtly disturbing country rocker “Codeine” (“One of my friends has taken you in and given you codeine”) induced shivers of unease as much as two-stepping. But the most poignant piercing of our collective heart came from the lovely, quietly devastating “Elephant,” a recollection of death and the difficulty of facing its facts. Despite its somber subject matter “Elephant” brought the biggest crowd response – acknowledgement of an amazing song beautifully performed.

It wasn’t all sad songs and waltzes, though. The atmospheric ballad “Cover Me Up” and yearning folk song “Traveling Alone” invited new love into a hard life, acknowledging the good influence a partner would have – apt, given the presence in the 400 Unit of Isbell’s wife, singer/violinist (and Lubbock native) Amanda Shires. He ended the main set with the sardonic “Super 8,” a greasy rocker in the Stones/Faces mode. Isbell and the band encored with “Danko/Manuel,” another of the songwriter’s noteworthy DBT tracks, and a blazing, guitar-fueled take on the Rolling Stones’ Sticky Fingers gem “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking.” “Unreal ending,” noted John Raffaele on Facebook, “I am shivering.”

Blurring the lines of country, rock and folk, Isbell proved that he’s earned every inch of ink spilled on behalf of his excellent songwriting and confident performance. “Jason’s not just a musician, he’s a wordsmith…and a new favourite,” Stacye Carroll declared. “So glad you showcased him here!” We can’t wait for ACL fans to see this show and experience it for themselves.

Jason Isbell and Neko Case continue ACL’s 39th season

This weekend ACL features two powerful singer-songwriters: Jason Isbell and Neko Case, each possessing a distinctive style and voice.

Hailed as “one of America’s thoroughbred songwriters” by The New York Times, Jason Isbell opens the episode, making his ACL debut. The Nashville-via-Mussel Shoals, Alabama singer/songwriter’s 2013 album Southeastern scored a Top 25 on the Billboard 200, and critical raves, including topping many critic’s year-end best lists. The New York Times Magazine declared, “the record is a breakthrough for Isbell—prickly with loss, forgiveness, newfound sobriety and second chances.” Rolling Stone calls it “one of the year’s best in any genre,” and Pitchfork raves “Southeastern is easily Isbell’s best solo album.” A former member of acclaimed Southern rock band Drive-By Truckers, Isbell launched a solo career in 2007. Backed by his band the 400 Unit, including his wife, fiddler Amanda Shires, and with a rawness and honesty that’s rare in contemporary songwriting, Isbell gives a stunning must-see performance on the ACL stage.

“It doesn’t happen very often,” said executive producer Terry Lickona, “but when Jason sang ‘Elephant,’ it literally gave me chills. That’s the kind of writer he is, and that’s the kind of performer he is.”

Neko Case makes a thunderous return to ACL (she first appeared in 2003) performing songs from her acclaimed 2013 release The Worse Things Get, the Harder I Fight, the Harder I Fight, the More I Love You, her sixth studio album. Case emerges from a three-year period the artist describes as full of “grief and mourning,” in the wake of the deaths of not just both her parents, but several intimates as well. With her fearless songwriting and musical curiosity, Neko Case captures fans with “one of the most memorable and seductive voices in music” (NPR).  Pitchfork says The Worse Things Get… “is the most potent album of her career,” and Rolling Stone raves that Case is “one of America’s best and most ambitious songwriters.” Case performs a captivating set of songs from the new record, and a few gems from her recent releases.

“There’s something about that voice, but it’s also about the delivery – which makes this performance that much more special,” said Lickona. “Her television performances are few and far between, so this is one that’s not to be missed!”

Janelle Monáe delivers a show-stopping Season 44 episode

Austin City Limits presents one of today’s most celebrated artists, Janelle Monáe, in a thrilling new hour of euphoric funk.  The award-winning singer, songwriter, performer, producer, activist and actor showcases songs from her widely acclaimed Dirty Computer in a must-see episode.

Monáe stole the show at this year’s namesake ACL Festival; now the visionary funk songstress delivers a show-stopping master class for her Austin City Limits debut, featuring songs from her third solo album, Dirty Computer, one of 2018’s most lauded releases.  Performing with a predominantly female ensemble, including a four-woman dance team, the Kansas City native slays in a breathtaking, eight-song set packed with exuberant choreography and elaborate costumes.  “I come in peace, but I mean business,” the powerhouse proclaims to the Austin audience. She performs Dirty Computer gems, singing the funky “Django Jane” refrain “Black girl magic, y’all can’t stand it,” atop a golden throne; the sizzling “Pynk,” a cleverly costumed celebration of female empowerment, and the sensual “Make Me Feel,” opening in silhouette to showcase her Michael Jackson and James Brown-inspired dance moves.  Saying “We love you, Prince,” Monáe pays tribute to her late mentor and collaborator with “Primetime,” from 2013’s The Electric Lady, as her guitarist evokes the unmistakable coda of the icon’s “Purple Rain.” She dazzles with back-to-back highlights from her Grammy-nominated 2010 debut The ArchAndroid, including her smash “Tightrope,” then wraps up her stunning ACL debut with a climactic “Come Alive.”

“The artistry of Janelle Monáe is stunning,” says ACL executive producer Terry Lickona. “She can do it all. There’s nobody else out there like her. I’ve never seen anybody like her on Austin City Limits – in over three decades, and that says a lot!”
