With her fearless songwriting and musical curiosity, Neko Case captures fans with “one of the most memorable and seductive voices in music” (NPR). Case returns to Austin City Limits for her second time on the show performing songs from her 2013 release The Worse Things Get, the Harder I Fight, the Harder I Fight, the More I Love You.
Born in Virginia in 1970 and raised, for the most part, in working-class Tacoma, Washington, she’s lived and worked in Seattle, Vancouver, B.C., Chicago, and Tucson, before moving five years ago to a 100-acre farm in rural Vermont. Sinice her 2003 performance on Austin City Limits she has released 2006′s Fox Confessor Brings the Flood, which was hailed as an astonishing collection of ambitious songs, and 2009′s Middle Cyclone, which vaulted her to new heights of critical and commercial success and netted two Grammy nominations. Paste wrote, “Case has never sounded quite so compelling as a storyteller, unleashing the full range of her humor, defiance, and despair.”
The Worse Things Get…, her sixth studio album, emerges form a three-year period the artist describes as full of “grief and mourning,” in the wake of the deaths of not just both her parents, but several intimates as well.
Pitchfork says The Worse Things Get… “is the most potent album of her career,” and Rolling Stone wrote that Case is “one of America’s best and most ambitious songwriters.”
