"My Number" (Season 42)
British alt.rock sensations Foals specialize in “anthemic art pop rich with detailed guitar churn, latticed beats and luminous electronics” (Rolling Stone). The quintet brings their frenetic energy to the ACL stage for their Austin City Limits debut.
Formed in 2005 in Oxford, England, the band members – and longtime friends – worked on perfecting their jittery, upbeat and postpunk sound by playing at local house parties, and soon gained an international following through their full-length debut Antidotes in 2008. The band’s widescreen alternatie rock sound reached full flower on the follow-ups Total Life Forever (2009) and Holy Fire (2013), both nominated for Britain’s prestigious Mercury Prize.
Soon after wrapping up their world tour for Holy Fire, the band wasted no time in stepping back into the recording studio. Singer and songwriter Yannis Philipakkis believes this sense of urgency is what gives 2015’s What Went Down its power. “If we’d had two months to deflate…the new record would never have sounded like it did.”
Critics have responded to that new energy on What Went Down. Uncut called it “their most fully realized yet,” while Exclaim marked it as “a varied and textured offering that will add depth to their high-energy live shows.” “Foals consolidate their position here by continuing to do what they do best,” noted Mojo, “namely expressing big emotions loudly through fizzing rock anger or unbridled, danceable joy.”
“It’s unfettered communication,” says Philipakkis. “Before, there’s always been that gap between the imagination, the romance and fantasy about what we wanted to create, and the actual reality, and that disparity has been difficult. But on this record, we’re the closest we’ve ever been to the vision in our heads.”
