Austin City Limits Spotlights Jelly Roll and The War And Treaty in a Powerhouse Hour

Austin City Limits (ACL) spotlights a pair of sensational live acts, both 2024 Grammy Best New Artist nominees: Jelly Roll and The War And Treaty. First, in a much anticipated ACL debut, Grammy and  CMA Awards-nominated Jelly Roll performs highlights from his chart-topping new album Beautifully Broken and his 2023 breakthrough Whitsitt Chapel. Then, celebrated husband-and-wife duo The War And Treaty, nominated for Vocal Duo of the Year at the upcoming CMA Awards, thrill with new songs and electrifying vocals in their return to the ACL stage. The new episode premieres Saturday, November 2 @8pm ET/7pm CT as part of Austin City Limits anniversary Season 50. No other artist has dominated 2024 like Jelly Roll, and country music’s newest superstar keeps gathering accolades and milestones: his new LP Beautifully Broken has earned the Nashville-based phenomenon his first No. 1 Album. The reigning CMA New Artist of the Year, a 2024 nominee for the upcoming CMA Awards’ highest honor Entertainer of the Year, and a 2024 Grammy Best New Artist nominee, Jelly Roll has scored hit singles on the country, rock and pop charts. A singular artist, he creates chart-topping anthems about adversity, faith and redemption that resonate with fans across genres. Currently headlining a U.S. arena tour, Jelly Roll’s unique connection with audiences is evident in his magnetic ACL debut. Jelly delivers a six-song set featuring gems from his record-breaking debut country album Whitsitt Chapel including the megahit “Need A Favor” and the Grammy-nominated “Save Me”—a confessional, vulnerable expression of self-doubt that became a No. 1 smash. Backed by a seven-piece band, he showcases his powerful brand of southern-rock and hip-hop-inflected country performing highlights from the just-released Beautifully Broken. He shares his own struggle with mental health and addiction before launching into “I Am Not Okay,” inspiring the rapt audience to sing along.

Known for a live show that’s almost revival-like in its intensity, The War And Treaty has emerged as one of the most electrifying acts in American music. The Nashville-based partners/ collaborators Michael and Tanya Trotter garnered their first-ever Grammy nods in 2024, including the coveted Best New Artist, along with 2024 Duo of the Year nominations from the CMA Awards and the Academy of Country Music. The pair made their Austin City Limits debut in Season 46 in 2020 during the series’ limited-audience pandemic tapings, and they now return at the peak of their powers to light up the ACL stage, this time for a full audience. “Can we take you to church tonight?” asks Michael, and the two deliver a high-energy, exhilarating showcase of new songs, opening with the seductive country soul scorcher “Stealing A Kiss.” Tanya introduces the “country gospel” song “Blank Page” from their 2023 major label debut Lover’s Game, which earned them a 2024 Grammy nomination for Best American Roots Song. The dynamic partners bring the fireworks, thrilling the crowd with their staggering vocal power and onstage chemistry. The captivated ACL crowd hangs on to every lyric, offering multiple standing ovations throughout a stellar set.

2024 kicks off the 50th Anniversary of Austin City Limits, which taped its debut pilot episode with Willie Nelson on October 17, 1974; the pioneering series then premiered on PBS in 1975. That now legendary debut became the cornerstone for 50 years of groundbreaking, award-winning music television. ACL is proud to have Willie Nelson return on the 50th anniversary of the pilot taping to commemorate Austin City Limits’ remarkable half-century milestone with a Texas-sized outdoor concert that took place on October 17, 2024, at Austin’s Long Center. Musical highlights from the performance will air as a special hourlong broadcast of Austin City Limits on February 15, 2025 as a season highlight of the program’s golden anniversary Season 50.

Isbell takes his place in ACL history with this revelatory hour, showcasing a new collection of songs from 2023’s acclaimed Weathervanes, newly nominated for a trio of 2024 Grammys, including Best Americana Album. The new installment premieres November 11 at 7pm CT/8pm ET as part of the series Season 49. Already a four-time Grammy honoree, Jason Isbell and his mighty band the 400 Unit, who made their ACL debut a decade ago in Season 39, return for a third appearance with their triple-nominated album Weathervanes as the centerpiece. Written and produced by the Nashville-based Isbell, the band’s much-lauded eighth offering is filled with expertly crafted, passionately performed songs that evoke the human experience. “I sure do love doing this show,” says Isbell. “Been watching this since I was a little kid.” Isbell opens the hour with the confessional “Save the World,” in which he contemplates his fears navigating parenthood during challenging times. One of music’s great live acts, the bandleader’s chemistry with his longtime 400 Unit is strong as the five-piece ensemble brings their songs to life. Set highlights include a pair of songs nominated for 2024 Grammy Awards: the melancholy yet soaring “King of Oklahoma” (nominated for Best Americana Performance), and the powerful acoustic gem “Cast Iron Skillet” (nominated for Best American Roots Song). The prodigious songwriter dips into his songbook for the gorgeous “Flying Over Water” from 2013’s breakthrough Southeastern. He polishes off this master class with the fiery Southern Rock-tinged “This Ain’t It,” as Isbell and guitarist Sadler Vaden’s fretboard interplay dazzles the Austin audience.

Austin City Limits presents a Season 49 high point: Rock superstars Foo Fighters return to shake up Austin City Limits in an epic hour featuring classics alongside gems from their latest album But Here We Are, newly nominated for a trio of 2024 Grammy Awards, including Best Rock Album. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame icons make their mark in the annals of ACL history once again, having previously graced the ACL stage twice before, with unforgettable performances in 2009 and 2015. ACL saluted the band’s 25th Anniversary in 2021 with a fan-favorite hourlong special featuring beloved classics from both appearances, now one of the most requested episodes in the ACL archives. American rock ‘n’ roll greats Foo Fighters bring a full tilt stadium show to the intimate Austin City Limits stage for their third headlining appearance, showcasing key tracks from their acclaimed eleventh studio album But Here We Are. In their first ACL appearance since 2015,  leader Dave Grohl guides the band through a blistering 10-song set, opening with the fan-favorite “Times Like These” and showcasing explosive new numbers, including “Rescued,” newly nominated for a pair of 2024 Grammys including Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance. The powerhouse set pauses as Grohl honors his late mother with the requiem “The Glass,” and dedicates “Aurora,” an early career highlight, to the band’s late drummer, Taylor Hawkins, saying it was his favorite Foos song. “It was the first song that we all wrote together, says Grohl. “So we like to do it every night for him.” Grohl doesn’t hold back in the emotionally raw hour, battered but not broken, head banging and hair flying, his impassioned vocals and primal howls anchoring the pummeling choruses as the mighty band rockets forward in another remarkable chapter. “I don’t like to say goodbye,” shares Grohl, “so I just say good night like this,” and closes the hour alone onstage with a stripped-down solo rendition of their signature “Everlong,” as the hushed crowd hang on to every word: a testament to the communal power of music.

“Foo Fighters are survivors and soldiers, in the great tradition of rock ‘n’ roll,” says longtime ACL executive producer Terry Lickona. “They have become valued members of the ACL family, and this show captures them as they begin a new chapter and a new adventure.”

Hailing from Havana Cuba, the celebrated showman and his eight-piece powerhouse band, The Tribe, make a thrilling ACL debut with standouts from Cimafunk’s acclaimed album El Alimento. The new installment rounds out the first half of ACL’s Season 48 and premieres November 12 at 8pm CT/9pm ET. In a remarkable ACL debut, Cimafunk & The Tribe deliver an electric, unique blend of high-energy funk, Caribbean rhythms and Afrobeat. Cimafunk and his band are earning raves for their incredible live performances tearing up stages across the globe. The freewheeling set explodes with a spectacular James Brown-influenced rhythm for the blazing “Relajao,” with Cimafunk flexing his dazzling vocals and radiant starpower alongside dance moves from percussionists Big Happy and Machete, a finger-busting bass solo from Caramelo, horns (and backing vocals) from Hilaria and Katy Cacao, and a merciless groove from drummer Dr. Zapa. “Put your hands up!” Cimafunk exclaims as he introduces “Funk Aspirin,” the band’s collaboration with funk legend George Clinton which opens 2021’s widely-hailed El Alimento. “Never forget,” the sweat-soaked Cimafunk laughs as the set reaches a fever pitch, “Shake that booty!” They close with “Me Voy,” the 2018 hit that made Cimafunk a household name in Cuba, bringing lucky audience members onstage and taking the groove to the next level.

“Cimafunk’s ACL debut was breathtaking,” says ACL executive producer Terry Lickona “He barely took a breath himself, and for that matter neither did the crowd, which was too busy dancing and screaming themselves. It was one of those rare shows where the performer and audience literally came together as one.”

“Austin is starting to feel like home away from home, and I wanted to bring the energy to Austin City Limits,” says Cimafunk. “It got really funky and sweaty in there with a lot of groove!”

Austin City Limits showcases a pair of breakthrough Canadian singer-songwriters: Montreal native Allison Russell shares the hour with The Weather Station, the performance name of Toronto’s indie-folk singer/songwriter  Tamara Lindeman. Russell makes her show debut with a radiant set featuring songs from her 2022 Grammy-nominated solo debut album Outside Child; while The Weather Station presents a hypnotic set highlighting selections from Ignorance, an album that topped many 2021 year-end-best-of lists. The new Season 48 installment premieres October 22 at 8pm CT/9pm ET. After years of collaborations with like-minded artists, Allison Russell released her debut solo effort Outside Child to much critical acclaim, earning a trio of 2022 Grammy nominations, including Best Americana Album; it was recently named 2022 Album of the Year by the Americana Music Association. The starkly beautiful breakthrough deals with the abuse Russell suffered as a child and her subsequent survival. Now based in Nashville, the singer/songwriter and multi instrumentalist begins a magnetic set with the folk rocker “The Runner,” joined by a six-piece all-female band; the number soars with exquisite backing vocals and strings. She picks up her banjo for the powerful “All of the Women,” an attempt to find survivor’s joy despite continued societal injustices and senseless tragedy. “We believe that music, shared like this, is creative communion, an essential service that helps build up our empathy,” Russell tells the crowd. A co-founder of the supergroup Our Native Daughters, Russell closes with the stunner “You’re Not Alone,” from the 2019 album Songs of Our Native Daughters.

Tamara Lindeman, leader of the Toronto outfit The Weather Station, has earned critical acclaim for the thoughtful, soulful songcraft showcased on her 2021 breakthrough Ignorance, a commentary on climate change issues. Ignorance was named a Top 10 Album of 2021 by Pitchfork, The New Yorker, Spin, New York Times, Uncut, The Guardian, and several others. In a captivating set centered on the album and accompanied by her five-piece band, Lindeman opens kneeling for the riveting single “Robber,” as the tempo and urgency increase, amplified by saxophone and keyboards for dramatic, atmospheric effect. The musically inventive performance draws from elements of jazz, folk and indie-rock. A highlight is the mesmerizing “Stars,” the main track from her stripped-down companion album, 2022’s How Is It That I Should Look At the Stars. Backed only by keyboards, Lindeman’s voice rings out with pure grace, with the crowd remaining intensely hushed for the entire song. 

“No artist can sing or express a song better than the writer, and Allison and Tamara are living proof of that,” said ACL executive producer Terry Lickona. “Their emotional evocations cover the deeply personal to the global, and their songs resonate with meaning as we try to navigate the world around us.”

“Everything’s gonna be fine, fine, fine” with the new installment of Austin City Limits (ACL) as superstar Alanis Morissette makes her first-ever appearance on the series with an hour of fan-favorites in an ecstatic performance. The new episode premieres Saturday, February 17 at 7pm CT/8pm ET as part of the series Season 49. ACL airs weekly on PBS stations nationwide (check local listings) and full episodes are made available to stream online at pbs.org/austincitylimits immediately following the initial broadcast. The show’s official hashtag is #acltv. 2024 marks the 50th Anniversary of the revered music institution, which continues its extraordinary run as the longest-running music television show in history, providing viewers a front-row seat to the best in live performance for an incredible five decades.  A monument to music, ACL has showcased iconic performances from legends and innovators in every genre of popular song for 50 years.  Produced by Austin PBS, and recorded live at ACL’s studio home ACL Live in Austin, Texas, the show remains a required stopping point for the finest acts to deliver stellar performances from the venerable ACL stage. On October 17, 1974, the notoriously TV-shy Willie Nelson taped the pilot episode; the trailblazing series then premiered on PBS in 1975.  This Peabody Award-winning program has earned its place in history and will salute its golden anniversary and incredible legacy with a yearlong celebration featuring archival gems, fan activations, all-star tapings, a PBS special, live concerts and much more.

A generational artist and one of the most influential singer-songwriters in contemporary music, Alanis Morissette opens an electrifying hour with “All I Really Want,” the opening track of her landmark 1995 Jagged Little Pill, one of the best-selling albums of all time. Backed by her ace five-piece band, and signature harmonica in hand, the Canadian trailblazer performs an eleven-song, career-spanning set filled with iconic anthems including “Hand In My Pocket,” “You Learn,” “Perfect” and “Head Over Feet” as she prowls the stage with her famous long brown hair flying. The opening strains of fan-favorite ”Ironic” has the crowd on their feet as the hitmaker holds out the mic for the rapt audience to carry the beloved chorus. She performs a pair of gems from 2020’s critically-acclaimed Such Pretty Forks In the Road, her ninth studio album: the soaring opening track “Smiling,” and raw interior monologue “Reasons I Drink.” The singer unleashes her powerful, feral vocals on “You Oughta Know,” the ultimate kiss-off anthem, for an empowering communal catharsis as the audience sings-along at full volume. Morissette reaches back to 1998’s Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie for the piercing confessional “Thank U,” a sweet set-closer in a performance for the ages.
