Episode recap: Jade Bird/Dayglow

Austin City Limits returns with a radiant hour showcasing a pair of next-generation singer-songwriters: UK native Jade Bird and Austin’s own Dayglow. The new installment premieres October 9 at 9pm ET/ 8pm CT as part of the series new Season 47. Despite the challenges facing live music during the past year, ACL is proud to deliver a new season of performances for viewers, all recorded at ACL’s studio home in Austin, Texas in 2021, in front of limited live audiences. The program continues its extraordinary run as the longest-running music television show in history, providing viewers a front-row seat to the best in live performance for a remarkable 47 years. Acclaimed singer-songwriter-guitarist Jade Bird performs highlights from her recent album Different Kinds of Light, recorded in Nashville with red-hot producer Dave Cobb. The Welsh native and recent Austin transplant cut her teeth in London pubs and open-mic nights in her teens and has been earning acclaim in the U.S. since 2018, winning top honors at SXSW and scoring a nomination for the Americana Awards “Emerging Artist of the Year.” The seasoned, charismatic 23-year-old lights up the ACL stage in a magnetic debut. Opening the set with the melodic “Headstart,” Bird soars with irresistible new songs including “Now is the Time” and “Candidate” alongside early career gems including her 2018 breakthrough hit “Lottery,” a kiss-off to an ex set to a catchy rock melody, and the fiery “I Get No Joy,” which she cheekily dedicates to the year 2020. Bird pays tribute to an American musical hero, Dolly Parton, with a luminous rendition of her classic “Do I Ever Cross Your Mind?” joined by Nashville singer Savannah Conley and guitarist Luke Prosser in gorgeous three-part harmony.

21-year-old Sloan Struble, who records music as Dayglow, brings all the feels in an exuberant ACL debut that will have viewers smiling ear to ear. The genial pop wunderkind shines in an upbeat set filled with his sunny, smart indie-pop. His 2021 sophomore album, Harmony House, is earning critical raves, with the Austin American-Statesman calling it “one of the best albums of the year, an effervescent and wise-before-his-time collection of songs that will leave you crying on the dancefloor.” “Let’s freakin’ rock” enthuses Struble as he happily bounces around the stage for the set opener “Something,” then delivers a dose of pure ‘70s groove with the infectious “Medicine.” Struble got his start making music in his teenage bedroom and he delights with tunes from his 2018 debut album Fuzzybrain, including the viral single that launched his runaway career, “Can I Call You Tonight?” A set highlight is the smooth rock banger “Crying on the Dancefloor,” complete with sweet soprano saxophone and a heart-swelling melody. Dayglow’s love of new wave and ‘80s pop anthems is evident on the dreamy synthpop breakthrough single “Close to You,” and he displays the modern/nostalgic dichotomy that is a hallmark of his music with a feel-good cover of the Tear For Fears classic “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” that merges with his own, “Run the World!!!” for a memorable close.

“Jade Bird and Dayglow are two of the brightest stars in the pop firmament right now, and we’re proud that Austin is home base for both of them,” says ACL executive producer Terry Lickona. “They bring a fresh sensibility to classic songwriting, with a little bit of edge and plenty of catchy hooks.”

The singer-songwriter showcases a chart-topping new collection, Downhill From Everywhere, alongside highlights from his five decade career in an exquisite hour premiering November 13 at 9pm ET/8pm CT as part of the series Season 47. “It’s like Valhalla for us, getting to play Austin City Limits,” says Jackson Browne in his first appearance on the ACL stage since 2002. Backed by an ace eight-piece band, Browne delivers a career-spanning set including time-worn favorites and more recent gems from the acclaimed Downhill From Everywhere, his fifteenth studio album. A Rock Hall inductee, Browne is an archetype of the singer-songwriter, Americana genre, and started blazing a trail in the 1970s with his personal, introspective lyrics. He opens the hour with the searching “I’m Alive,” a mid-career highlight about moving on from past sorrows. Browne showcases new material tailor-made for these times, including the roots rocker “My Cleveland Heart,” about trading in a fragile human heart for a resilient, artificial replacement (gamely introducing it as a “cheerful song”). The veteran social justice advocate performs “The Dreamer” a powerful bilingual song that eloquently addresses the struggles facing a generation of children of immigrants. Browne duets with singer-songwriter Leslie Mendelson for the stunning collaboration “A Human Touch” and brings backing vocalist Chavonne Stewart out for the folk-rocker social commentary “The Long Way Around.” He dazzles with early-career classics including the radio staple “Doctor My Eyes” and “These Days,” written when Browne was just sixteen-years-old. 

“You wanna sing this one?” calls out Browne before closing with a pair of songs from 1973’s For Everyman: fan favorite “Take It Easy,” the Eagles 1972 smash that he co-wrote with Glenn Frey, poignantly calling for the crowd to “Sing it so Glenn Frey can hear you!” Browne allows the entire band to shine, segueing seamlessly into the wistful “Our Lady of the Well,” with round robin solos all-around for an unforgettable close.

“In so many ways, Jackson Browne epitomizes the return of live music in the post-pandemic 21st century,” says ACL executive producer Terry Lickona. “He’s a bridge to the best music of the last 40 years, but his new songs are spot-on relevant to the world we live in today. There aren’t that many artists who can pull that off.”

Episode Premiere: Austin City Limits Showcases Brittany Howard in Electric Hour

Austin City Limits (ACL) presents an electric hour with one of music’s finest live acts, five-time Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Brittany Howard. The powerhouse vocalist and ACL favorite returns for Austin City Limits’ anniversary Season 50 to showcase new numbers from her latest album What Now alongside career highlights. The hourlong episode premieres Saturday, October 26 @8pm ET/7pm CT. ACL airs weekly on PBS stations nationwide (check local listings) and full episodes are made available to stream online at pbs.org/austincitylimits immediately following the initial broadcast.

2024 kicks off the yearlong 50th Anniversary of the revered music institution, which continues its extraordinary run as the longest-running music series in television history, providing viewers a front-row seat to the best in live performance for an incredible half-century.

“Let’s have us a good time,” smiles Howard, taking the stage in a celestial, sparkling caftan. The Nashville-based musician (and frontwoman for four-time Grammy Award-winning Alabama Shakes) brings her singular musicality to a shapeshifting sound encompassing everything from psychedelia and dance music to dream-pop and avant-jazz in a 13-song set, with songs from her powerful second solo LP What Now as the centerpiece. Opening with a trio from the album, the songs are anchored in Howard’s inimitable and infinitely commanding voice—a supreme vessel for channeling raw emotional truth. Howard is backed by her stellar eight-piece band,  amplified by longtime backing vocalists Shanay Johnson and Karita Law. Howard throws it back to her 2019 solo debut Jaime for the radiant Grammy-winning radio hit “Stay High,” as the ecstatic crowd joins in on the soaring chorus.

“Live music is such an important thing, you know,” shares Howard from the stage. “I saw my first live band play when I was eleven years old, and it was from that moment that I decided that this was what I wanted to do. And I studied hard and I worked real hard, taught myself how to play, and I taught myself how to write songs, and now I get to be here with all of ya’ll.”  With that, she dons an acoustic guitar and renders a mesmerizing, stripped-down “Short and Sweet,” before being rejoined by her full band with Howard on explosive guitar for the hard-funk title track “What Now” in a cathartic close.

“When Brittany Howard sets foot on a stage, she doesn’t really need a microphone,” said longtime ACL executive producer Terry Lickona. “She owns that stage, and she owns the room. Her voice is the voice of power, and truth. We gave her the full hour, because she deserves it! See and hear for yourself.”

2024 kicks off the 50th Anniversary of Austin City Limits, which taped its debut pilot episode with Willie Nelson on October 17, 1974; the pioneering series then premiered on PBS in 1975. That now legendary debut became the cornerstone for 50 years of groundbreaking, award-winning music television. ACL is proud to have Willie Nelson return on the 50th anniversary of the pilot taping to commemorate Austin City Limits’ remarkable half-century milestone with a Texas-sized outdoor concert that took place on October 17, 2024, at Austin’s Long Center. Musical highlights from the performance will air as a special hourlong broadcast of Austin City Limits scheduled for early 2025 as a season highlight of the program’s golden anniversary Season 50.

Brittany Howard delivers a revelatory hour of soul, funk, rock and jazz showcasing songs from her solo debut Jaime. The acclaimed autobiographical collection is a personal reckoning on love, religion, family and race in America. The Alabama native and Alabama Shakes frontwoman bounds onstage in a sparkling sequin robe with an irresistible cover of Funkadelic’s “Hit It or Quit It,” joyfully instructing her backing singers to “Show ‘em how we do it girls.” The gifted singer and performer takes the audience on a journey of Jaime highlights, including a radiant “Stay High” the Grammy-winning radio hit. Introducing the soul burner “Baby,” Howard winks “I wrote this song here when I was on the low side of an 80/20 relationship.” Joyously dancing with her backing singers, Howard segues into “Goat Head,” a powerful tale of identity, addressing her own experience growing up mixed race in the South. She dazzles with choice classics including the Jackie Wilson rave-up “(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher,” and treats the audience to another round of Funkadelic with the provocative “You and Your Folks,” amplified with funky bass lines and guitar shreds from her eight-piece band. A set highlight is the spoken word poetry of “13th Century Metal,” a recitation on which Howard preaches in defense of love and brother/sisterhood: “It’s been said before but it bears repeating: “We are brothers and sisters, each and every one.” She unleashes her powerhouse vocals on the funky shuffle “History Repeats,” complete with synchronized dancing from Howard and her backing singers, and closes out the spectacular hour with a psychedelic soul take on the Beatles’ “Revolution.”

An eight-time Grammy nominee, CMA and GLAAD Media Award-winner, Brandy Clark is one of her generation’s most respected and celebrated songwriters and musicians. The Nashville-based tunesmith has written smashes for Miranda Lambert, Kacey Musgraves, and others, as well as scoring her own string of hits. She’s been called “one of the greatest short-story-songwriters in country” and showcases her gift for capturing characters’ interior lives in her ACL debut. Performing gems from Your Life is a Record, Clark opens with the Grammy-nominated stunner “Who You Thought I Was.” A set highlight is “Remember Me Beautiful,” a powerful elegy to those lost, and a song that has especially resonated with audiences worldwide during the pandemic. Clark closes out her magnetic set with a pair of fan favorites from her 2014 debut album 12 Stories, the buoyant “Get High” and the stately “Hold My Hand,” demonstrating her remarkable range.

“I’m Charley Crockett…Charley with an ‘ey’ like Charley Pride and Crockett with two t’s like Davey,” announces the charismatic singer-songwriter in a luminous ACL debut. Hailing from the Texas bordertown of San Benito, the rising star is earning raves for his live shows and singular style that combines Western swing, swirling Tex-Mex, roadhouse boogies, Cajun and country blues. The prolific Crockett, a recent nominee for Emerging Act of the Year at the 2021 Americana Music Awards, performs his brand of “Gulf & Western” music in an irresistible set filled with highlights from his repertoire and his recent album Music City USA. Crockett opens with the throwback shuffler “Goin’ Back to Texas” accompanied by his band the Blue Drifters on shimmering keyboards, trumpet, pedal steel, standup bass and scorching guitar. The Lone Star native performs “In the Corner” from his recent tribute album to the late Texas honky-tonker James Hand alongside his own two-steppin’ classic “Welcome to Hard Times.“ Willie Nelson said it best,” says Crockett, “this one’s about the wrong side of the Mississippi” before launching into the title track Music City USA. “It’s been an honor to serve you tonight,” says Crockett as he and his band of Drifters ride out with the freight-train rhythm of “Paint It Blue.” 

“Austin City Limits has always been a home to the Country music outlaws, rule-breakers, and gender and genre-benders,’ said ACL executive producer Terry Lickona. “Brandy and Charley live up to that tradition. They’re both storytellers with an edge.”

On October 17, 1974, Willie Nelson taped the pilot episode; the trailblazing series then premiered on PBS in 1975.  This Peabody Award-winning program has earned its place in history and will salute its golden anniversary and incredible legacy with a yearlong celebration featuring archival gems, fan activations, all-star tapings, a PBS special, live concerts and much more.

On the eve of Austin City Limits’ 50th Anniversary, blues, rock and soul maestro Bonnie Raitt, a thirteen-time Grammy-winner, makes ACL history once again with highlights from her remarkable five-decade career. Raitt first-appeared on the series during Season 9 in 1984, has returned throughout the decades, and, in 2016, was inducted into the ACL Hall of Fame. For this golden occasion, the American original brings her best to the Austin stage in a magnetic set filled with numbers from her celebrated 2022 album Just Like That…, sharing stories behind her latest work alongside career highlights. She opens with a Grammy-winner, the slowburn “Made Up Mind,” 2023’s Best Americana Performance, captivating with her sultry slide guitar turns. In great voice and with her stinging fretwork as potent as ever, Raitt revisits her landmark 1991 album Luck of the Draw for the blues-rocking “No Business.” She brings the house down with her soulful vocals on the heartbreaking “Blame It On Me,” a stunner she shares is her favorite song from her latest album, grinning “I always say if we got along, I wouldn’t have anything to sing about.” 

The devoted social activist welcomes a special guest, Nashville-based singer/guitarist Sunny War to join her for a bluesy, acoustic rendering of Jackson Browne’s socially charged “World in Motion.”  Sitting at the keyboards, Raitt reveals “I’ve been wanting to sing this for Austin City Limits for a while,” as she leads into the self-penned title track of her 1989 breakthrough Nick of Time. “I ain’t afraid of getting older,” smiles Raitt, as she prefaces the fan-favorite on the passage of time. “Just dig the ride, baby.” She displays her powerhouse chops with a medley of Rufus & Chaka Khan’s 1974 devilishly funky “You Got the Love” effortlessly joined with her irresistible 1991 hit “Love Sneakin’ Up On You.” Raitt credits her ace, four-piece band (bassist Hutch Hutchinson, drummer Ricky Fataar, keyboardist Glenn Patscha, and guitarist Duke Levine plus guitarist emeritus, George Marinelli) throughout the performance, referencing the “bunch of soulful guys I got up here.”

In a set highlight, she dedicates the 2023 Grammy-winning Song of the Year “Just Like That,” to her longtime friend John Prine. “When we lost John it just pierced me so deep…This is a song I wrote inspired by singing ‘Angel From Montgomery’ every night,” she notes, referencing the beloved Prine-penned song, which she and the iconic songwriter memorably performed together during ACL’s Season 28 in 2002. She closes out the epic, 10-song set with a shuffle blues classic, a steamy cover of B.B. King’s “Never Make Your Move Too Soon,” in honor of “one of the greatest blues towns in America—Austin, Texas!”
