Taping recap: Sudan Archives

Theatrical, experimental, and playfully authentic, electronic R&B violinist Sudan Archives delivers an excitingly dynamic performance at her debut Austin City Limits taping, presenting various hits from the breadth of her musical discography. Aside from bringing a new level of musical complexity to the current state of R&B, she showcases a world that mixes modern musical influences and traditional string playing. The experimental fiddler’s diverse musical background makes for a sound that nearly transcends genres, with tracks that involve elements of hip-hop, techno, Irish Celtic music, and soul, all deeply influenced by the South African Sudanese violin scene. The fiddler and her band – consisting of three Austin-based backup singers (Maya Sampleton,Grace Sorensen, Shelbi Alexandria), a bassist (Ghalani Crenshaw), and electronic violinist (DSharp) – bring an enthrallingly theatrical essence. The performance was presented for the live ACL audience and to fans around the world via live stream. 

Lyrically exploring themes of spirituality, self-identity, relationships, and femininity, the experimental artist reflects her ethereal nature via her wardrobe and set-up, a manifestation of her own enchanting world. Sudan wore a fairy-warrior type wardrobe–a plaid dress with metallic silver ballerina slippers and a leather sheath strapped across the back, where she holds her mighty bow. The violinist and crew play amongst a stage showered with rose petals and next to mic stands that seemingly grow out of the stage ground intertwined with vines and roses. Candles, and water-filled wine glasses are spread throughout the stage. The multi-talented violinist kicks off the second song of the show with “Nont for Sale” from her 2018 EP Sink. The track that serves as a testament to the musician’s thought provoking lyrical commentary intertwined with spirituality, as she sings “My strings propagate through space and time/Here and there at the same time/Hand dimensions and basic rhyme/You ain’t gotta be mad, look deeper, go higher, when you climb.” Her signature midi violin makes its first appearance, signaled by the swooping sound effect of a sword being removed from its sheath. A symbolic representation of her own musical armor, the importance of the instrument’s role in her discography becomes increasingly emphasized both musically and visually throughout the performance with several sound effects that represent the fiddle as a weapon. The violin plays the role of the leader, narrator, and protagonist of the song’s story. Sudan Archives echoes a desire to re-imagine and re-examine the traditional instrument’s role in popular music. 

Displaying the musician’s breadth of musical influence, track “Freakalizer” mixes the sound of the 90’s to early 2000’s R&B traditional beats with modern techno elements. Before beginning the performance, she conducts a certified “vibe check,” lighting sage with the comment “I gotta get the vibe right,” and moving into the intro of the song with a call to action: “Alright Austin, where my freaks at?” Removing her iconic leather sheath, she moves towards shifting the stage focus to the performance art components of her stage presence, incorporating grand intentional gestures towards cameras and audience members. Attesting to the musician’s theatrical, expressive, and authentically “in your face” musical presence, the violinist leaves the stage and moves casually through the crowd on the floor below. Connected by Sudan’s creation of a playful club-like atmosphere, the crowd seemingly transports to a night out at Club Sudan. Dancing with fans surrounded within a dance circle, Sudan Archives is the lively, fun, “feel good” girlfriend everyone wants to party with.

Showcasing the fiddler’s musical roots, influences, and well-rounded knowledge of the violin’s cultural presence and history, Sudan Archives performs a traditional Irish jig. Influenced by the likes of gospel, the Sudanese violin scene, and Celtic music, the musician calls out to the audience saying “Who in here is Irish? I love your culture. I joined the fiddle club and my life hasn’t been the same.” Gesturing that the crowd clap along, Sudan captures the role that culture plays in the artist’s unique sound by fusing a Celtic jig with hip-hop. This track showcases Sudan’s roots as a string player and the motivation behind her songs’ raw “fiddler” approach. Transitioning into one of artist’s biggest hits, as recently featured on The Stephen Colbert Show, track “Selfish Soul” demonstrates Sudan’s powerful commentary on femininity, the female appearance, and self-worth. She sings soulfully and moves intentionally up and down the stage, fist bumping backup singers and singing “If I cut my hair, hope I grow it long/Back long time like way before/If I wear it straight will they like me more?/Like those girls on front covers.” Ending the track with an explosive violin solo, the musician spins in circles in a rapidly moving pace as the crowd erupts into applause. 

Returning back to the stage to perform their encore, Sudan and band begin to play “Limitless”, a comforting and compelling song on society’s preoccupation with materialism and superficiality. The musician asks the audience to illuminate the theater with their iPhone lights as they sway to the track’s melody. The performer watches the crowd light up with a sea of swaying phone lights, singing “All we have is the internet/It’s okay to be afraid…All we have is the internet/We’re too cool to admit.” The soulful singer moves back into the crowd swaying with their movement and ending her performance by noting how the lights “looked like lightning bugs.” A cheerful end to a moving track, Sudan wraps up her ACL debut. 

As one of the most uniquely experimental performances to take the ACL stage, Sudan Archives delivers on the campy, “in your face” realness that radiates from her music and stage presence. From violin virtuoso to a feel good club jam, taking a visit to Sudan’s world is unapologetically thought-provoking and undeniably authentic. Presenting a complex musical sound elevated by the captivating components of her performance art, Sudan Archives leaves no room for predictability or conformity on her stage.

Episode premiere: Spoon

Austin City Limits turns up the volume with one of modern rock’s premier bands, Austin’s own Spoon, as the hometown heroes return to the ACL stage showcasing their celebrated tenth album, Lucifer On The Sofa, a 2023 Grammy nominee for Best Rock Album. The hourlong installment premieres February 18 at 7pm CT/8pm ET on PBS as part of ACL’s Season 48.  Following the broadcast, the episode will be available to stream at 11pm CT/12am ET at pbs.org/austincitylimits for four weeks. Ten albums and nearly three decades into a remarkable tenure, Austin’s esteemed rock ambassadors Spoon return to Austin City Limits for their fifth appearance, joining the ranks of Willie, Merle and Lyle with the most appearances on the ACL stage since their series debut in 2003. “First (ACL) taping I ever saw was in 1989 with Stevie Ray Vaughan,” leader and Austin native Britt Daniel tells the crowd as Spoon carve their name in Austin history. The rock stalwarts continue to make music boldly on their own terms, always pushing forward to become one of the best bands of their generation. They perform gems from their lauded tenth studio album, Lucifer on the Sofa, written and recorded in Austin. Rolling Stone hails the work as “Spoon’s best record ever;” it finds the band continuing to explore new sonic territories through elevated guitar rock and switchblade sharp songwriting. With Lucifer as the centerpiece of a stellar 13-song set, the quintet perform new highlights alongside fan favorites from their impeccable catalog. 

Opening full-tilt with the jagged guitar stomp of Lucifer’s “The Hardest Cut,” Daniel & company demonstrate their showmanship as they segue into the shimmering, synth-driven “Inside Out” from 2014’s They Want My Soul. The rapt crowd thrills to new numbers, including the irresistible anthem “Wild,” the piano-fueled “My Babe” and the striking title track, a midnight ramble through Austin set to ghostly keyboards and augmented by a trio of saxophones and trombone. With fire guitar, tight drums and catchy choruses, the band perform career highlights, including the early, tension-filled gem “Utilitarian,” from their 1998 debut A Series of Sneaks, and the blazing “Got Nuffin” from 2010’s Transference.  “The Underdog,” a horn-driven marvel from their mid-Aughts breakthrough Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga thrills the crowd. “Did we have a good time Austin?” asks frontman Daniel. “We did too,” and they close the hour with the iconic riffs of “Rent I Pay,” from 2014’s They Want My Soul for an epic mic drop.

“Spoon is not only a proud ‘hometown band,’ but the best proof that rock music in the 2020’s is not ‘dead,” says ACL executive producer Terry Lickona. “They continue to stretch and define what rock music means in today’s world, and this ACL performance proves it.”

Rounding out Season 48 on February 25 st 7pm CT/8pm ET is a Hall of Fame tribute to another Texas music legend, Austin City Limits 8th Annual Hall of Fame Honors Joe Ely, which features a song-filled salute from revered Lone Star musicians and Ely’s longtime collaborators, Texas all-stars The Flatlanders, with Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock, alongside fellow Texans Rodney Crowell and Marcia Ball. The hour features a memorable induction by renowned Texas author Lawrence Wright along with historic highlights from the influential Ely’s eleven appearances on the ACL stage

Fellow newly-minted Hall of Fame inductee Sheryl Crow was celebrated with a companion Hall of Fame tribute that kicked off the second half of ACL’s Season 48 in January 2023 and featured music greats Brandi Carlile, Jason Isbell, Brittney Spencer and Lucius’ Jess Wolfe saluting the Grammy Award-winning artist. Season 48 premiered in October 2022 with a historic line-up spotlighting an unprecedented number of female artists, including a sterling season opener featuring singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile, who recently earned a trio of 2023 Grammys. Season 48 also showcased many highly-praised acts who topped 2022 Year-End Best Lists, including electronic duo Sylvan Esso, Americana singer-songwriter Allison Russell and indie pop duo Lucius. Other highlights were ACL debuts from breakout artists including Japanese Breakfast, Arlo Parks and Cuban funk sensations Cimafunk and The Tribe along with deep-dive hours spotlighting acclaimed rock act The War on Drugs, country superstar Maren Morris and legendary alternative rock pioneers Pavement.

Maren Morris kicks off this radiant hour with the autobiographical “Circles Around This Town,” detailing her early days in Nashville, trying to connect as a songwriter. The multi-platinum, award-winning singer-songwriter demonstrates why she’s one of the leading voices in modern music, equipped with a knockout voice and songwriting chops, lyrics that dig deep and boundary-pushing hits that cover the country-rock-pop landscape while transcending genre labels. Backed by a six-piece band, the Arlington, Texas native’s relaxed persona charms the Austin crowd as she performs highlights from her acclaimed album, Humble Quest, including the soul-searching title track  in which she struggles to find “the line between fulfilled and full of myself,”  the hard-edged rocker “Nervous” and the atmospheric “Detour.” The career-spanning 13-song set includes numbers from her chart-topping 2016 major label debut Hero, including the instantly memorable melody of platinum smash “80s Mercedes,” along with fan-favorites “I Could Use A Love Song” and “Rich.” A bonafide hitmaker, Morris shines on the quadruple platinum smash “Bones” from her 2019 album Girl, the song that dominated 2020 and catapulted Morris into the mainstream Top 40. Morris closes the hour with her Grammy-winning breakthrough hit, the rousing gospel-tinged anthem “My Church,” as the thrilled audience sings along with its “Can I get a hallelujah?” chorus. 

“Like few others in today’s Country music scene, Maren captures the spirit of legends like Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton while blazing her own path with her raw, personal and sometimes even rowdy songs,” says ACL executive producer Terry Lickona. “She’s a perfect fit for ACL, and this show is one for the ages.”

Austin City Limits showcases alternative rock innovators Pavement in their first appearance on the series for a rare television performance marking their 30th anniversary. The legendary band performs a 15-song fever dream career-spanning set filled with fan favorites and classics in a fascinating hour offering viewers an immersive dive into their influential artistry. The veteran Northern California band fronted by singer-songwriter Stephen Malkmus, is one of the most popular and distinctive acts to come from the American underground in the 1990s. Pavement are Mark Ibold, Scott “Spiral Stairs” Kannberg, Stephen Malkmus, Bob Nastanovich and Steve West. The beloved band released five era-defining albums – Slanted And Enchanted (1992), Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain (1994), Wowee Zowee (1995), Brighten The Corners (1997) and Terror Twilight (1999) – before disbanding in 1999. Pavement rewrote the rules of how rock could be presented, using a slacker veneer suffused in irony to disguise superior songcraft and musicianship, scoring both underground and bona fide hits. The celebrated band reunited in 2022 for its first shows in more than a decade to mark the 30th anniversary of their seminal 1992 debut.  

Pavement has lately garnered a new generation of fans and takes the ACL stage to wild applause for its free-wheeling set. The band performs career highlights and gems from across their catalog, including “Summer Babe,” the opener of Slanted And Enchanted, and a perfect example of the band’s patented tight-but-loose approach to guitar rock. The anthemic “Embassy Row” from 1997’s Brighten The Corners showcases percussionist/vocalist Bob Nastanovich prowling the stage with the microphone, his trademark discordant shouts a unique contrast to Malkmus’ laconic croon. B-side gem and viral smash “Harness Your Hopes,” a fan favorite with a laid-back melody and sharp lyrics, inspires a loud, ecstatic reaction from the crowd. The hits keep a-comin’ with “Spit On A Stranger,” a late period chestnut from 1999’s Terror Twilight and  “Painted Soldiers,” with guitarist Kannberg taking on vocals for the indie rock standout. The hour closes with the familiar “whoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo” that signals “Cut Your Hair,” Pavement’s Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain signature tune, eliciting huge cheers from the Austin audience.

The War On Drugs made a powerful ACL debut in 2015 and now return with songs from their two most recent releases, the celebrated I Don’t Live Here Anymore, the band’s fifth album, a 2023 Grammy Award nominee, and 2017’s A Deeper Understanding, which earned the band their first-ever Grammy for Best Rock Album. Led by singer/guitar virtuoso and primary songwriter Adam Granduciel, the Philadelphia outfit has steadily evolved into one of rock’s most compelling live acts over the course of a nearly two-decade career, deftly blending gritty heartland rock, richly melodic vocals and sparkling analog synthesizers on a series of beloved albums. The New York Times says, “With this fifth studio album, they’ve reached improbable heights with meticulously crafted, guitar-forward songs”; Consequence hails, “It’s hard to imagine a musical experience that’s more enveloping and uplifting”; and GQ raves, “[I Don’t Live Here Anymore] is easily the band’s clearest, most vibrant, and upbeat. You’ll want to play it loud and see it live.”

The septet open their set with “Pain,” a Deeper Understanding cut that perfectly demonstrates their ability to blend bright melodies with brooding synth textures and grand-scale guitar solos. Bandleader Granduciel guides the group through a series of adventurous and emotionally resonant explorations in the hour, including the lush soundscapes and familiar synth and guitar intro of title track “I Don’t Live Here Anymore,” a radio favorite and the #1 song at the Adult Alternative format in 2022. “Thanks for having us on the legendary Austin City Limits,” Granduciel remarks. “Growing up without cable TV, this is one of the only things I grew up watching.” A wave of synthesizers signals “In Chains,” the closing number that mixes shimmering dreampop with anthemic rock, earning rapturous raves from the ACL audience.

“The War on Drugs are the perfect bridge between the legacy music in which ACL’s roots run deep and the contemporary sound of rock music today,” said ACL executive producer Terry Lickona. “Lyrically and sonically, they represent a big part of the sound of ACL today.”

Austin City Limits (ACL) offers viewers unparalleled access to featured acts in an intimate setting that provides a platform for artists to deliver inspired, memorable, full-length performances. Now in its 48th Season, the program is taped live before a concert audience from The Moody Theater in downtown Austin. Austin City Limits is the longest-running music series in television history and remains the only TV series to ever be awarded the National Medal of Arts. Since its inception, the groundbreaking music series has become an institution that’s helped secure Austin’s reputation as the Live Music Capital of the World. The historic Austin PBS Studio 6A, home to 36 years of ACL concerts, has been designated an official Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Landmark. In 2011, ACL moved to the new venue ACL Live at The Moody Theater in downtown Austin. ACL received a rare institutional Peabody Award for excellence and outstanding achievement in 2012.

Episode premiere: Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats/Adia Victoria

Austin City Limits showcases next-generation blues and soul in a new hour with one of music’s finest live acts, Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats sharing the hour with soulful Nashville singer-songwriter Adia Victoria. The new installment premieres January 14 at 7pm CT/8pm ET, as ACL’s Season 48 resumes with six new episodes. The Peabody Award-winning program, recorded live at ACL’s studio home in Austin, Texas, continues its extraordinary run as the longest-running music television show in history. ACL gives viewers a front-row seat to the best in live performance as this American music institution nears its remarkable half-century milestone. ACL airs weekly on PBS stations nationwide (check local listings) and full episodes are made available to stream online at pbs.org/austincitylimits following the initial broadcast.  

Denver’s Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats have become one of the premier rock and soul bands of the past decade. The road-tested, highly acclaimed live outfit made a sensational ACL debut in Season 42 in 2016; now, in their return appearance, Rateliff and his mighty seven-piece Night Sweats showcase their bonafides with songs from their latest The Future.  Fueled by a crackling three-piece horn section, the combo turn in a powerhouse performance filled with highlights from the album, including the gut punch set opener “Survivor” and anthemic “Face Down In The Moment,” alongside the fan-favorite soul banger, “I Need Never Get Old” from their 2015 self-titled breakthrough. The band delivers non-stop grooves as frontman Rateliff skillfully switches from electric guitar to keyboards to acoustic, and, to wild, appreciative applause, the ‘Sweats bring things to a rollicking close with the high-energy rouser “Love Don’t.”

Next up is Spartanburg, South Carolina native Adia Victoria, making her ACL debut with numbers from the lauded A Southern Gothic, a 2022 Americana Music Awards nominee for Album of the Year, executive produced by T-Bone Burnett. A daughter of the South whose work continues the rich legacy of Black Southern storytelling, the Nashville-based singer-songwriter explores her relationship to the South and the South’s relationship with her as a Black woman. “What we do I consider to be church,” says Victoria, “Because I consider the blues to be sacred.” A captivating performer and storyteller, Victoria shares many of the stories behind her “gothic blues” songs. “This first song is about a young girl from South Carolina who runs away from home, too far, too fast,” says Victoria before sliding into the smoldering burner “Far From Dixie.” Her feral songs capture tension and confront difficult truths, touching on love and anger, for a spellbinding debut.
