A true artist of the world, Angelique Kidjo’s music is a lesson in joy and passion. Rolling Stone has called her “a sensual firebrand who moves freely between luxuriant detail and exultant minimalism in her music and agenda.” The singer-songwriter and activist makes her Austin City Limits debut performing songs from throughout her career.
Throughout her three-decade long musical career, Kidjo has worked or collaborated with many notables from the jazz and pop worlds – everyone from Vampire Weekend’s Rostam Batmanglij to Pater Gabriel. Kidjo’s 2008 recording Djin Djin won a Grammy for Best Contemporary World Music Album. She won her second Grammy for her 2014 release EVE, which was awarded the Best World Music Album award. “I’ve spoken for many years about the beauty of African women, and I don’t need to talk anymore about it because on this recording I am letting the voices of the women show their beauty to the world,” she said of EVE.
The singer-songwriter has also spent her career advocating and championing causes for her homeland of Africa, particularly education for African girls. A UNICEF International Goodwill Ambassador since 2002, Kidjo helped found the Batonga Foundation, which advocates for young women in Africa to receive secondary education.
With her new album Angelique Kidjo SINGS with the Orchestre Philharmonique Du Luxembourg, Kidjo and the conductor/composer Gast Waltzing blend her native African music – sung in Fon and Yorùbá – with the classical music traditions of Europe. Native Beninese singers and veteran Brazilian guitar player Romero Lubambo give the album harmonic texture and intimacy. In a review of one of Kidjo’s live performances with the orchestra, The Telegraph called the collaboration “genuinely inspired.”
