Rescheduled: ACL TV Taping with Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit from June 14 to September 18

Due to a schedule change, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit have to postpone their previously announced taping originally slated for June 14th. However, we are pleased to announce that Jason and the band will still be taping the show for our upcoming Season 49 and can confirm a rescheduled taping date of September 18th. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and look forward to the new date this fall.

A Jason Isbell record always lands like a decoder ring in the ears and hearts of his audience, a soundtrack to his world and, magically, to theirs, too. Weathervanes, Isbell and his GRAMMY®-winning band the 400 Unit’s eighth album, out June 9, carries the same revelatory power. This is a storyteller at the peak of his craft, observing his fellow wanderers, looking inside and trying to understand, reducing a universe to four minutes. Isbell shrinks life small enough to name the fear and then strip it away, helping his listeners make sense of how two plus two stops equaling four once you reach a certain age—and carry a certain amount of scars. “There is something about boundaries on this record,” Isbell says. “As you mature, you still attempt to keep the ability to love somebody fully and completely while you’re growing into an adult and learning how to love yourself.” Written and produced by Isbell, Weathervanes is a collection of grown-up songs: Songs about adult love, about change, about the danger of nostalgia and the interrogation of myths, about cruelty and regret and redemption. Some will make you cry alone in your car and others will make you sing along with thousands of strangers in a big summer pavilion, united in the great miracle of being alive. The record features the rolling thunder of Isbell’s fearsome 400 Unit, who’ve earned a place in the rock ‘n’ roll cosmos alongside the greatest backing ensembles, as powerful and essential to the storytelling as The E Street Band or the Wailers. They make a big noise, as Isbell puts it, and he feels so comfortable letting them be a main prism through which much of the world hears his art. He can be private but with his mighty band behind him he transforms, and there is a version of himself that can only exist in their presence. The roots of this record go back into the isolation of the pandemic and to Isbell’s recent time on the set as an actor on Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. There were guitars in his trailer and in his rented house and a lot of time to sit and think. The melancholy yet soaring track “King of Oklahoma” was written there. Isbell also watched the great director work, saw the relationship between a clear vision and its execution, and perhaps most important, saw how even someone as decorated as Scorsese sought out and used his co-workers’ opinions. “It definitely helped when I got into the studio,” Isbell says. “I had this reinvigorated sense of collaboration. You can have an idea and you can execute it and not compromise — and still listen to the other people in the room.”

Rapp’s BITE ME North American headlining tour—her largest to date—kicks off September 23rd and includes arenas across the U.S. After landing her breakout role as Regina George in Mean Girls on Broadway, Rapp turned her attention to a solo music career in 2022 with the release of her debut EP, Everything to Everyone. With Darling Blue, Grammy-nominated Marcus King reunites with his longtime live band for their first recorded album together since 2018’s Carolina Confessions. Inspired heavily by the Blue Ridge Mountains in his home state of South Carolina, the new album incorporates elements of country, folk, psychedelic rock and Motown-era R&B and continues the conversation on King’s experience with addiction and depression. Recorded at the legendary Capricorn Studios in Macon, Georgia, the album features collaborations with Billy Strings, Noah Cyrus, Jesse Welles, Jamey Johnson and Kaitlin Butts, with co-writes from the band Midland and Lainey Wilson. Tracks like “Carolina Honey,” “Heartlands” and “Honky Tonk Hell” pay homage to King’s Greenville roots and deep appreciation for his home state. Set for release September 26 on American Records/Republic Records, Darling Blue captures the spirit of a live band performance. “It truly felt like home,” King shares. “My band and I were just working out songs to perform live but ended up creating a piece of recorded music for our fans. More than anything I’ve done before, this album felt like a real concerted effort to make music for myself, and for ourselves as a band—creating for the love of creating and being as honest as we possibly can. We put everything we had into making something that we love and we have faith that the audience will feel that and love it too.” Following a successful run of critically acclaimed releases with the Marcus King Band, the singer and guitar phenom made his solo debut with the Grammy-nominated El Dorado in 2020, followed by Young Blood (2022) and Mood Swings (2024). This summer saw the return of King’s beloved Marcus King Band Family Reunion festival in Charleston, SC. King continues to tour internationally throughout 2025, sharing stages with Eric Church, Chris Stapleton and Cody Johnson.

Reel Rarities: The Flaming Lips and The Shins

If you’ve ever visited the original Austin City Limits studio and wondered why you can still find pieces of confetti in the rafters, there’s a good explanation. On September 21, 2004, the Flaming Lips brought their infamously colorful stage show to the ACL stage, and we’re bringing this excellent episode to the big screen on February 20 at the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz.

Taped during the tour for Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, the show features all the balloons, animal costumes, white suits, fake blood and little bits of colored paper you can imagine. And music, of course, including Lips classics “Race For the Prize” and “She Don’t Use Jelly,” a special version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” with Lips multi-instrumentalist Steven Drozd’s father Vernon on sax and Wayne Coyne’s infamous duet with Cat Power on “War Pigs.”

The Lips were paired with the Shins, who were in top form while on the tour in support of their acclaimed Chutes Too Narrow LP.

We’re proud to present this night of indie rock heaven at the Alamo Ritz on February 20 as the latest installment of Reel Rarities. We’ll have trivia and prizes to give away, as well as a preview of the new Shins album. You can find details on the screening here. Tickets will go on sale a week prior to the date.

Reel Rarities: The Decemberists and Explosions in the Sky

Thus far our screenings in the Reel Rarities series have been classic episodes featuring iconic artist like Tom Waits, Loretta Lynn, B.B. King and Neil Young. But on Dec. 19 at the Alamo Ritz, our latest installment moves forward in time to just a few years ago, as we run the great Season 33 episode featuring the Decemberists and Explosions in the Sky. Folk rockers and recent Grammy nominees the Decemberists recorded their second ACL episode early this year, while the Austin-based EitS won raves for its 2011 LP Take Care, Take Care, Take Care. In this show you’ll hear them supporting their excellent records The Crane Wife and All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone, respecitvely. It’ll be a great night of indie rock at the Ritz.

Reel Rarities: Neil Young goes country

How would you like to experience a bit of music history right in the heart of the Live Music Capital of the World? Well, we at Austin City Limits advise you to look no further.

On Monday night we present Neil Young, our next installment in the series Reel Rarities: Handpicked Gems from the ACL Vault.  Join us at the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz on Oct. 24 at 7 p.m.  to witness the Godfather of Grunge himself in his ACL debut when we screen this classic episode from 1985. Get tickets on the Alamo Drafthouse’s website

For those of your familiar with his signature rock demeanor, next week’s screening will give you all a separate dose of Young’s musical abilities in his mid-1980s foray towards traditional country. Best of all, the episode features his only full-length performance with the
International Harvesters, an eight-piece band of Nashville session players with whom he toured in support of his country-western album Old Ways. By the time Young and the Harversters hit the stage they are firing with all cylinders from the country blast of “Get Back to the Country” to the rock & roll meltdown of “Down By The River.” Its amazing how much ass a band with a pedal steel and Cajun fiddle can kick. (R.I.P.  BenKeith and Rufus Thibodeaux, respectively.) To top it off, this is the only full-length filmed performance of Young with this particular band.

So, are you ready for some country? Of course you are!

Reel Rarities: Handpicked Gems from the ACL Vault is an ongoing series at the Alamo Drafthouse. Tickets are $5 and the sales benefit our friends over at the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians.

Check out our Facebook page for a chance to win a pair of tickets for this special screening. And don’t forget to check out our cool Tumblr to see Neil on the ACL stage.

See you there!
