After decades of stellar performances, Mavis Staples is an undisputed legend. Tonight, she makes her Austin City Limits debut in support of her 2010 album You Are Not Alone.

Staples is a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winner, and a National Heritage Fellowship Award recipient. VH1 named her one of the 100 Greatest Women of Rock and Roll, and Rolling Stone listed her as one of the “100 Greatest Singers of All Time.”

With You Are Not Alone, the legendary vocalist adds a remarkable new chapter of an already historic career. She partnered with Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy as producer on this very personal album, which received the Grammy Award for Best Americana Album in 2011. “With Tweedy, she has created a record that is mindful of her own past, yet these songs sound fresh, original, and often inspiring,” wrote Pitchfork.

“All of these songs are me, but in a different way, with a different sound,” says Staples. “The phrasing, the tempos, the arrangements are different, but the messages are the same things I’ve been saying down through the years. They’re about the world today – poverty, jobs, welfare, all of that – and making it feel better through these songs.”

On this follow-up to We’ll Never Turn Back, 2007’s inspiring collection of civil rights-era songs, “Staples is making music that is strikingly modern, but the defining concept of the album is timeless: unadulterated hope” (CMJ).
