Smooth vocals backed by carefully selected, self-reflective lyrics and a California pop sound have been hallmarks for all of Jenny Lewis’ musical projects. Lewis, who Entertainment Weekly calls “the Emmylou Harris of the Silverlake set,” returns to the Austin City Limits stage to perform songs from her release The Voyager.
The singer/songwriter, musician and actress began her musical career with the indie rock band Rilo Kiley in 1998, releasing six albums. The band appeared on ACL during Season 31 in 2005. Rilo Kiley officially disbanded in 2011, but Lewis had already established herself as a solo artist.
With 2006’s Rabbit Fur Coat and 2008’s Acid Tongue, Lewis created witty and vulnerable songs that won over the critics. The A.V. Club wrote, “Lewis draws from country and pop to build indelible songs around some capital “T” themes.” Lewis also lent her voice to several other works by accompanying bands like Bright Eyes, Cursive and The Postal Service.
Her most recent solo release, The Voyager, came out earlier in 2014. “All together, The Voyager‘s balance of frothiness and fearless introspection make it something pretty special, wrote Drowned in Sound. The songs take a personal and nostalgic feel while exploring milestones of life. Spin wrote, “Lewis remains one of our foremost chroniclers of heartache and its discontents.”
