Coming off a BRIT Award win for Best Male Solo Artist and three 2016 Grammy nominations, singer-songwriter-guitarist James Bay conquered the States with his debut LP Chaos and the Calm, as well as making his Austin City Limits debut.

Bay considers himself a true soul singer, chasing “that goose bumps moment” by channeling artists such as Miles Davis, Bruce Springsteen and James Blake. Like those artists, his music is intensely personal. “I’m trying to keep things human and emotional,” he explains. “It’s hard to know what the balance is, but you know it when you hear it. It’s such a personal process that it’s hard to share stuff sometimes.”

But share he does on Chaos and the Calm, casting a light onto his attempts to make sense of the world, and a young man’s discovery of love and loss. Recorded in Nashville with producer Jacquire King (Kings of Leon, R.E.M.), the album went to #1 in the U.K. and top 15 in the U.S., producing the breakout hits “Let It Go” and “Hold Back the River.” He received Best New Artist and Best Rock Album Grammy nominations, plus a nomination for Best Rock Song for “Hold Back the River.”

Clash Music says Chaos and the Calm is “an album of genuine intent, full of poignant reflections on romance, hope, fear, the past, the present, and the future.” The Guardian writes, “Bay’s relatable pop-rock holds broad appeal for those, like him, who are figuring out the paths their lives may take.”
