While Austin City Limits has earned justifiable praise over the past several years for giving up-and-coming artists a chance to shine, we certainly don’t want to ignore the veterans. In that light, we’re proud to present a night with Cheap Trick. The legendary Midwestern band – still boasting its original lineup of Robin Zander, Tom Petersson, Bun E. Carlos and the irrepressible Rick Nielsen – has carved a unique niche for itself in the music industry, moving from regional popularity in the mid-70s to massive success in the late 70s and 80s to respected elder statesmen status today. The band’s unique blend of power pop melody, punk rock energy and arena rock excess has made it influential on artists from all walks of musical life, and its hits – “I Want You to Want Me,” “If You Want My Love,” “She’s Tight,” “Dream Police” and “Surrender” among them – are as indelible now as when they were originally waxed. But the Trick is no nostalgia act –critically acclaimed recent records like Rockford and The Latest and live shows proudly display a band as creative and powerful as it’s ever been.
